Mex (Multiple exposure), the IRIS Window Manager, was "Silicon Graphics' original high-performance windowing system" used for its IRIS series of terminals and workstations running GL2, and for its IRIS-4D series of workstations running 4D1-1.0 through 4D1-2.3.

Mex 4D1-1.0 to 4D1-2.3

The mex "window manager is initialized when the workstation is booted."

"Mex is typical of many early window systems in that the window manager (the policy) is inextricably linked with the window system (the mechanism)."
