Editing the Nekochan Wiki
The Nekochan Wiki has been created to capture useful information about SGI systems and software, the ways in which people do or have used them, and to record answers to questions that appear frequently in the Nekochan Forums. Anybody is welcome to make changes to the wiki, but it is recommended that you spend some time in the forums to get a feel for the community and how the wiki is used before making any major changes.
Getting started is not hard, but you will need to create an account first - and these accounts are, unfortunately, independent of your forum account. (You're encouraged to use the same username for both types of account to avoid confusion.) To create your account, just click on the "login/create account" link on the top of any wiki page.
Once you've logged in you can use the "edit" tab at the top of any wiki page to make changes to that page. A full tutorial about editing and creating wiki pages is available here: How to edit a wiki
To create a brand new page, Type "www.nekochan.net/wiki/Abc123" to create a new topic about Abc123... replace Abc123 with you topic name. Note that all wiki changes are patrolled. It will say something to the effect of "Abc123 not found do you want to create it? " Please search for topics before randomly creating pages that might already exist.
Guidelines: Please avoid topics related to "pirating" commercial software, or the buying/selling/trading of same. Pages on these topics will be subject to removal. Companies, whether the original owners or patent trolls, crawl the 'Net regularly looking for their trademarks. If they find anything here they think might be actionable they will threaten the site owner with lawsuits, in which case he'll have to pull the plug and we'll lose this resource.
Before adding a page look through the page index to see if it already exists with a different name than what you had in mind. Doing a search is also a good idea. You may find that a topic you were going to add under Software: IRIX is already covered by a page in the HowTo category. (See the tutorial above for how to add a "redirect" page so that the topic can be found under both names.)
If you want to blog, use blogger.com
Spam is usually deleted within hours and the originator blocked, if you see spam on a topic, report it to the site owner. Use a subject like "wiki spam" and include a link to the page in question.
This wiki is about SGI .. Topics should relate to SGIs in someway. We all use Linux/FreeBSD/Solaris/etc but there are much better places for information on non SGI topics.
Never add a page without putting it into an existing category
[[Category:HowTo]]
adds this page to HowTo category. The wiki was once a mess and it took over two weeks everyday adding pages into categories to clean it up. If the page is not in a category the only way anyone will find it or read it is with the rarely used search.
