SGI Announces New Fuel R16000 700MHz Workstation

I missed this a couple of days ago, but SGI announced the latest update to the Fuel workstation line on the 9th: Fuel R16000/700. Still too much for me to afford (the 700MHz models start at $13,995), but it's always nice to see new IRIX workstations still coming out of SGI. Plus they're a lot cheaper than IRIX workstations were a few years ago. Read the SGI press release here.

Yeah, I should be getting mine by the end of the week. Hell, I might even order a second one!

Hell yea; yesterday mine came from fed-ex.... and then I woke up. :)

I was nearly going to ask weather they come in red - then I noticed they basically are.

Lovely - wish I could find a reason for work to buy one.

Fuel has been out for a little while now as an R14000 machine like Octane, but the R16000 CPU announcement could be significant: the Octane2 did not get the new R16000 CPU. There has been speculation this is a sign a new machine to replace Octane is around the corner.

Man I'd love to pick up a new SGI...wonder if SGI would take my car as a trade in... It's fast! and a convertible!

reminds me of some show (Mission Hill) where they're in a "ferraro" dealership and there's this sign "Ask about trading in your home"

Apple is going to kill SGI. Their new Macs are faster than Fuel's and possibly octanes under 3K. Plus they aill be true 64bit UNIX thanks to IBM PorwerPC 970. Sgi should sell itself to Apple before it is too late
