The NUMAlink module is a 2U air-cooled device that transfers messages between the Origin/Onyx 300 or 350 system modules via a NUMAlink 3 interconnect. These routers are similar to the NUMAlink3 routers (R-Bricks) used with Origin 3000 systems. Some of the notable differences between NUMAlink Modules and R-Bricks are:

  • NUMAlink Modules are available in AC or 48VDC-powered versions, while Origin 3000 R-Bricks were supplied solely as 48VDC powered configurations
  • NUMAlink Modules have serial numbers prefixed with "M"; Origin 3000 R-Bricks have serial numbers prefixed with "L".

Both NUMAlink Modules and R-Bricks have secure serial numbers that do not support end-user reconfiguration. Because of the secure differing serial number prefixes used, the otherwise similar NUMAlink Module and R-Brick are not transparently interchangeable. There is an unsupported workaround to allow use of an Origin 3000 R-Brick in a multi-module Origin/Onyx 300 or 350 system: Use a rbrick in place of a NUMAlink module on Origin 300.

Physical configuration

There are two types of NUMAlink Modules: an AC-powered NUMAlink Module and a DC-powered NUMAlink Module. The functionality of these two modules is the same; however, as the names imply, the modules receive power from different sources. The AC-powered NUMAlink Module has an internal power supply that provides an external receptacle that will accept standard PC-style power connections. The DC-powered NUMAlink Module receives DC voltage from a separate external power source called a Power Bay. Either version of the NUMAlink Module has an L1 controller with an external USB "Type B" port to allow connections to an L2 (or L3) system controller.

The NUMAlink Module consists of eight ports. Four of the eight ports (labeled 2, 3, 4, and 5, or B, C, D, and E) are capable of bi-directional transfers of the L1 controller signals of connected modules. These L1 controller signals are routed through an internal USB hub to the same external USB type B port used by the NUMAlink Module L1 controller.

The other four ports on the NUMAlink Module (labeled 1, 6, 7, and 8, or A, F, G, and H) cannot directly transfer data to or from the L1 controllers of connected modules. When you expand beyond 4 bricks, you need an external USB-hub to concentrate the other L1's in order for the L2/L3 controller to access those bricks. This is a legacy from the Origin 3000-style R-Brick which was only intended to use the first four ports for C-bricks (C-to-R connections), whereas the four remaining ports were intended for router interconnect (R-to-R connections) and you didn't need to pass those L1 signals across routers.

This unit was measured using a regular watt-meter plugged into a standard 230V wall outlet:

Running:        43W
