There are two (maybe more) ways to decompress bz2 archives.

The easiest way is to do this:

bzip2 -dc somefile.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -

If you have GNU tar from SGI Freeware or Nekoware you can do this:

gtar -xvjf file.tar.bz2

You may also have to make a symlink to differentiate it from the original tar (only necessary with SGI Freeware; Nekoware installs as gtar):

/usr/freeware/bin/tar to gtar
